I’m exploring a transition from Graphic Design into Interior Design after a 20+ year career in the creative field. For the last decade, my work centered on designing event spaces — not just the visual identity, but also traffic flow, floorplans, room layouts, and furniture sourcing. In many ways, my role sat right next to interior design, and I’ve realized that’s the part of the work I’ve always loved most.

A recent “aha” moment made things clearer: I often offer to design kitchens and bathrooms for friends just for fun, yet I almost never volunteer to design a sign, invitation, presentation, etc. I’ve completed two kitchens and four bathrooms in my own homes, and I’m realizing this is the direction I want to grow.

I’m seeking a mentor because I’m unsure how to translate my existing skills into the interior design or kitchen and bath world without going back to school. At 50, I’m ready for a shift into a field that feels more aligned with my strengths and interests — I just need guidance on what steps to take, what’s realistic, and how to make this transition.

What I Expect From A Mentor:

I’m looking for a mentor who can help me understand how to translate my graphic design and event‑space planning background into the interior design or kitchen & bath world. I’d love guidance on how my existing skills transfer, what gaps I may need to fill, and what realistic entry points look like for someone shifting fields later in life.

I’m also hoping to connect with someone who has industry insight and, ideally, a network within interior design or K&B. Breaking into a new field at 50 — especially one where I don’t have established contacts — is challenging, and having someone who can point me toward opportunities or introduce me to the right people would make a meaningful difference. I’m not expecting anyone to “get me a job,” but I would value mentorship from someone who understands the landscape and can help me navigate it.

Areas where I’d appreciate support:

* Understanding how my design and spatial‑planning experience translates

* Identifying any skills or certifications that would strengthen my transition

* Advice on building a small portfolio from the work I’ve already done

* Insight into how people enter the field without going back to school

* Guidance on networking, connecting with firms, or finding entry‑level roles

* Occasional introductions or recommendations when appropriate

I’m simply looking for a knowledgeable, encouraging guide who can help me take thoughtful steps toward a field that feels more aligned with my strengths and interests.
